1980 Season Notes & Press Clippings
- Probably no big stick in baseball hits a home run higher and farther than "Kong" Kingman. However, even the strong guys have to be healthy to do their job, so an injury severely limited Dave in '80. In a freak accident, he slipped on a bat after crossing home plate on May 30th and suffered a shoulder injury. That tumble saw him spend most of the remainder of the season sitting and watching. Even his much-publicized baseball column which appeared in the Chicago Tribune was discontinued. Without Kingman's valuable RBI assistance, the Cubs fell to the cellar in the National League East, winning only 64 games.
- Was named to National League All-Star team for the third time in his career, struck out in his only at-bat.
- Limited by injuries to just 81 games and 3 tours on the disabled list, he still hit 18 homers and knocked in the second-highest number of runs on the Cubs.
